Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies
There’s something magical about Christmas baking. The sweet smells wafting from the oven, the sound of laughter from kids helping in the kitchen, and the pure joy of sneaking a warm cookie before they’ve even cooled. For many busy moms, holiday baking is more than just another item on the to-do list; it’s an opportunity to slow down, create memories, and pass down traditions.
But let’s be honest: as much as we love the idea of baking, the reality can feel overwhelming. Between holiday shopping, decorating, and juggling everyday responsibilities, finding time to bake homemade cookies can seem daunting. That’s where this recipe comes in—our family’s favorite Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Yes, you read that right: avocado. Trust me on this one. These cookies are everything you love about a classic chocolate chip cookie—soft, gooey, and bursting with chocolate—but with a modern twist. Using avocado as a substitute for butter adds a subtle richness, keeps the cookies moist, and even sneaks in a little extra nutrition. It’s a win-win! Over the years, these cookies have become a staple in our home, and they’re perfect for busy moms who want to bake something unique, delicious, and simple this holiday season.

The Recipe: Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ready to try these for yourself? Here’s our tried-and-true recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe avocado (about ½ cup mashed)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup chocolate chips (dark, milk, or semi-sweet—your choice!)
Instructions:
- Prep the Avocado: Mash the avocado in a mixing bowl until smooth. You can use a fork or a hand mixer for this step. (Pro tip: let the kids help with this part—they’ll love it!)
- Mix Wet Ingredients: Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla to the mashed avocado. Beat until well combined.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Bring It All Together: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Chill the Dough: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes. This step is crucial for preventing the cookies from spreading too much while baking.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Scoop tablespoons of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake Time: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers may look slightly underbaked, but they’ll set as they cool.
- Cool and Enjoy: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Then, enjoy the fruits of your labor—preferably with a cup of hot cocoa!

Tips for Success
- Choose a ripe avocado: A perfectly ripe avocado will mash easily and blend seamlessly into the dough. Avoid using overripe or brown avocados, as they can alter the flavor.
- Get creative: Try mixing in chopped nuts, dried cranberries, or white chocolate chips for a fun variation.
- Involve the kids: Baking is more than just making cookies; it’s about making memories. Let your kids help with measuring, mixing, or decorating to make the process even more special.
Making Time for What Matters
As busy moms, it’s easy to feel like we have to do it all—perfectly. But the beauty of holiday traditions isn’t in the perfection; it’s in the moments we create with our families. Baking these Avocado Chocolate Chip Cookies has taught me that sometimes, it’s the simplest traditions that mean the most.
So, grab your mixing bowl, invite the kids into the kitchen, and give this recipe a try. Whether you’re an experienced baker or just starting out, these cookies are a reminder that holiday magic is something we create with love, laughter, and a little bit of avocado.
