Sharing stories from the Farmhouse and the Homestead

Welcome to the Farmhouse!

Gone are the days when the front porch was a place to gather, have a drink with friends and relax.  Gone are the days when our grandparents would sit on the porch and tell stories of the good ol’ days.

I don’t know about you but I miss those days.  It’s time to bring BACK the stories and that is EXACTLY what we are doing.  We love hearing how others got into homesteading, what they are doing on their homestead and what lessons they have learned. Come along with us as we connect with other homesteaders around the county and hear their stories.

Pull up a chair… Can I get you something to drink?… How is the family?

The Latest Stories & Homesteading Adventures

Searching for the famous frog jam recipe and bear jam from Grocers Orchard taught me that the best food memories are about stories, not ingredients.
B.E.A.R. Jam Recipe
-1 cup of blueberries, I like mine slightly chopped and puréed before measuring
-1 cup, firmly packed, elderberries
-1 cup of cooked apples (applesauce)
-1 cup of raspberries
-1 box of Sure-jell fruit pectin (or 1/3 cup commercial pectin)
-4 & 1/2 cups cane sugar
(Don’t fuss at me if this is too much sugar for you. Swap out the regular sure-jell for a reduced sugar one and reduce the sugars to suit your taste) 😋
-Place the 4 cups (1 cup each) of fruit into a 6 - 8 quart heavy bottom pan and on low heat begin to bring to a simmer.
-Add fruit pectin and stir well. Raise temperature of stove to high.
-Add sugar one cup at a time, leaving time for the sugar to melt before adding another cup. Return to a full rolling boil and boil for one minute, stirring constantly.
-Remove from heat. Quickly skim off foam with a metal spoon. (If any)
-Ladle jam into hot sterilized half-pint jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids and screw on bands.
-Process filled jars in a boiling - water canner for 10 minutes. (Start timer when water returns to boiling)
-Remove jars from canner; cool on wire racks.
🌟Makes approximately 6 - 8 oz jars.
F.R.O.G. Jam Recipe
24 oz sun-dried figs, finely chopped or run through a food processor
36 oz frozen raspberries
¾ cup fresh orange juice (from 2-3 oranges)
Zest of 1 orange
¾ cup fresh lemon juice (from 3-4 lemons)
2 tbsp fresh grated ginger (or 1 tsp ground ginger powder)
4 cups granulated sugar
1 package fruit pectin
Instructions
Combine Ingredients: In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan or pot, combine the processed figs, frozen raspberries, orange juice, orange zest, lemon juice, and ginger.
Simmer the Fruit: Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a light boil over medium-high heat. Once it’s boiling, reduce the heat and allow it to simmer gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add Sugar: Stir the 4 cups of sugar into the fruit mixture until it is completely dissolved.
First Boil: Increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a full, rolling boil (a boil that cannot be stirred down).
Add Pectin: Stir in the entire package of pectin.
Final Boil: Bring the jam back to a hard, rolling boil. Boil for exactly **one minute**, stirring constantly.
Jar the Jam: Remove the pot from the heat. If there is any foam on top, skim it off with a spoon. Carefully ladle the hot jam into clean, sterilized canning jars, leaving about ¼ inch of headspace at the top.
Seal the Jars: Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth. Place the lids on top and screw on the rings until they are “fingertip-tight” (secure, but not forced).
Process: Place the jars in a water bath canner, ensuring the water covers the jars by at least 1-2 inches. Bring the water to a boil and process the jars for 10 minutes.
Cool: Turn off the heat, remove the canner lid, and let the jars stand in the hot water for 5 minutes before removing them to a towel-lined counter. Let them cool, undisturbed, for 12-24 hours. You should hear the lids “pop” as they seal.
