Welcome to the Farmhouse
About Deeanne & Hummingbird Acres
Hello and welcome! I’m Deeanne, the heart and hands behind this blog. For us it all started with Poison Ivy and a google search. Where Mr. Google Pants taught us how to get rid of it and introduced us to Homesteading and Permaculture. We jumped head first into homesteading and along the way felt the pull to share our Homesteading Adventures.
I am Deeanne, mama to four plus Ru, our chocolate lab. My husband Jamie and I believe in treating everyone like family, keeping our minds and hands busy with DIY and renovation projects, gardening, making delicious goodies and meals to share, and always having an empty bed for guests. Join us as we share our love for simple living and homesteading.

It was the beginning of 2020 my mom had passed away less than 6 months before, COVID had just hit and the world came to a screeching halt. Jamie had left his desk job to join me in running the daycare, which we had to close and we were uncertain if we would be able to reopen.
We were stressed, depressed, and exhausted; and couldn’t understand why the lifestyle we were living wasn’t making us happy anymore.
We ended up taking the camper to Virgina to stay at the Sedalia Center for a few weeks. While we were there we volunteered to clean up the garden beds which turned out to be covered in POISON IVY!! Jamie is highly allergic to poison ivy and our clean up efforts came to a STOP.

Homesteading for Beginners
… Even if you’re short on time, have no idea where to start, and don’t want to give up modern luxuries.
From starting a vegetable garden and raising chickens to preserving food and crafting homemade goods, each post is a chapter of my ongoing adventure. But this blog isn’t just about what I do; it’s about what we can learn together. It’s a space for sharing knowledge, inspiring each other, and building a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for a simpler, more sustainable way of life.
So, whether you’re an experienced homesteader, an aspiring green thumb, or simply curious about this way of life, I invite you to join me on this journey. Let’s learn, grow, and thrive together in our pursuit of a more grounded and gratifying existence.
Welcome to my homesteading journey – where every day is an opportunity to cultivate happiness from the ground up.
The center was already practicing mindful gardening and did not want to use any harsh chemicals so I turned to Mr. Google Pants and discovered Tenth Acre Farm , then Homestead and Chill.
At that point my eyes were opened to this completely different lifestyle that I didn’t know existed. I read every book and blog I could find about homesteading and permaculture.
When we returned to Maryland we started to change our lifestyle. It wasn’t easy and I would jump from website to website or book to book to learn different skills. Many times I wanted to quit!! The amount of information online was overwhelming and I didn’t know where to start. Or I would start something and it wouldn’t go as everyone said it should so I would abandon my learning.
When I finally took a step back and looked at our goals and created a plan for how we were going to get there, the magic started to happen.
